CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your academic performance across all semesters. It's on a 10-point scale in most Indian universities (or 4.0 in US universities).
But here's what most students don't know: CGPA matters far less than you think for jobs.
Students stress over CGPA because:

CGPA = Sum of (Credit × Grade Point for each course) / Total Credits

SGPA (Semester) = 158 / 18 = 8.78
Then CGPA is the average of all semesters' SGPAs weighted by credits.

Required attendance = (Required % × Total Classes) / Classes Attended So Far
OR: Maximum classes you can skip = Total Classes − (Required % × Total Classes / 100)
Total classes in semester: 100
75% required = 75 classes minimum
Maximum you can skip: 100 − 75 = 25 classes
But if you've attended only 60 classes after 80 days (80 classes held):
Current attendance = 60/80 = 75% ✓ (Safe, but no buffer)
Remaining classes: 20
If you attend all 20: 80/100 = 80% (Good)
If you skip all 20: 60/100 = 60% (Barred from exam)
Got a backlog (failed or retaking a course)? Decision: Clear now or put it off until later?

CGPA: 7.8 | Credits completed: 120
1 backlog: Physics (4 credits, previous grade F)
Benefit: CGPA improves slightly; you move on with it cleared.
If next semester you score 8.5 average across 20 credits (no backlog retake):
Later (sem 7), clear backlog with A grade:

Don't panic. Compensate with:
In interviews, if asked about low CGPA: Be honest. "I struggled balancing coursework with learning practical skills. I focused on projects and internships, and my technical skills are strong. Let me show you my work."
Math: Solve, don't watch. Math only clicks when you struggle and solve it yourself.
Physics: Understand derivations. Don't memorize formulas; derive them.
Chemistry: Organic requires visualization. Draw mechanisms. Inorganic requires tables and patterns.
English/Reading: Read actively. Annotate. Time yourself on comprehension passages.

To get NIT cutoff (usually top 20K), you'd need 270+ score.
Cutoff = minimum score to get into a specific college/branch
Rule of thumb: If last year's cutoff for CSE at NIT-Delhi was 250, expect 240–270 this year depending on difficulty.

A: Only if: (a) You got below your expected score due to time management/mistakes (not concepts), (b) You have 6–8 months to prepare again, (c) You can dedicate 8–10 hours daily to study. Otherwise, prepare while pursuing engineering/medical studies.
A: Yes. You have 3 more semesters to pull it up to 7.5+ (doable). Focus on: (1) Internship (summer of sem 4), (2) Side projects, (3) Data structures + algorithms. CGPA is a filter; skills are what matter.
A: 150 is roughly rank 600K+ (you can get a low private engg college). Decision: (a) Take drop if your concept clarity is weak and you can fix it, (b) Join a college, strengthen fundamentals, take JEE Advanced (allowed 2x attempts). Many successful engineers took drops; many didn't. It's not a failure either way.
